Executive Director

The new Executive Director of the Instituto Clima e Sociedade, Maria Netto, came from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), where she acted as the main specialist. Both at the IDB and at the New Development Bank, where she was head of the financial institutions division, she worked on the development of innovative financing programs and strategies with local financial institutions and capital markets to promote private sector investment in low-carbon and resilient projects. Previously, Maria worked at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), where she was responsible for overseeing global projects to help countries assess investment and financial flows and policy options for integrating green business into different sectors and economic activities. She has also served for more than 10 years at the Secretariat of the Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where, among others, was responsible for leading the institution’s work on bilateral and multilateral financial cooperation, and for evaluating and monitoring investments and financial flows to address climate change and the development of carbon market mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol. She holds a master’s degree in economics from the Institute of International Studies in Geneva.
