New climate goal proposal

OC releases a study that used a personalized tool for the calculation

The Climate Observatory (OC), a partner of iCS , has released a new climate goal proposal for Brazil. The proposal takes into account the objective established in the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C above the pre-industrial period – a goal that, today, if the current commitments of countries are followed, will not be achieved.

This is the third proposal by the OC for the so-called Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which are the official documents sent to the UNFCCC by each signatory country of the Paris Agreement. The document was based on the technical note released by the same institution with a new approach in relation to the previous NDC proposals . It defines a just contribution from Brazil taking into consideration the Climate Equity Reference Framework (CERF), which is a tool that distributes the effort of climate mitigation between the countries based on criteria such as equity and historical responsibility. However, the calculator required a “personalized” version that contains historical data of emissions by land use.

According to the proposal, Brazil must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 92% by 2035 in relation to the 2005 levels. For more detailed information, access this link.
